Signs You Need Sewer Cleaning
Sewer issues often start small but can become more serious if ignored. Look for these common signs that it's time to schedule a professional sewer cleaning:
- Slow Drains: Water draining slowly from sinks, showers, or bathtubs can point to a forming blockage in the pipes. Address this early before it becomes a bigger issue.
- Foul Odors: Persistent unpleasant smells from your drains can mean sewage is backing up. Sewer gases can create health hazards if left unchecked.
- Multiple Clogged Drains: Simultaneous clogs in different fixtures—like toilets, sinks, and showers—usually indicate a problem in the main sewer line.
- Gurgling Sounds: Drains that make gurgling or bubbling noises when water leaves may have trapped air, caused by a blockage.
- Water Backing Up: Water that backs up into your shower, bathtub, or basement after using another fixture suggests a serious blockage in the sewer line.
Blocked sewer lines in Kansas City become especially noticeable during wet seasons when groundwater rises. If several fixtures act up during heavy rain or after snow melts, schedule a professional inspection to help prevent basement flooding. Local codes may require prompt attention if backups threaten shared or city connections, so timely sewer cleaning can help you stay in compliance.
If you notice any of these warning signs, act quickly. Waiting can make the problem worse. Contact Zoom Drain of Kansas City for fast, thorough service that helps your system work as it should.
DIY vs. Professional Sewer Cleaning
Attempting to clear clogs on your own can come with risks. Most store-bought drain cleaners won’t solve large or deep blockages, and some chemicals can damage your pipes. While these products may give temporary relief, they often push the issue deeper and don’t address the root of the problem.
In the Kansas City area, deep blockages, heavy grease buildup, or root intrusion require more than simple tools. Sewer lines that run under public easements may need special permits for work, so hiring a professional sewer cleaning company reduces the risk of accidentally violating local codes. Our technicians know how to identify code concerns and will explain your options if repairs need city approval.
Professional sewer cleaning involves clearing the problem completely to help prevent it from returning. Zoom Drain uses hydro jetting to blast debris, grease, and roots from pipes—restoring flow without harmful chemicals. Our team checks for underlying issues like damaged pipes or invasive tree roots, so you get a clear picture of your system’s health.
Before starting, we complete a detailed inspection inside your sewer line using a video camera to find hidden problems. This lets us recommend solutions that fit your property and the typical issues found in Kansas City’s sewer infrastructure. We also share advice for keeping your pipes clear year-round, supporting your system’s longevity and helping you avoid future disruptions.
Professional sewer cleaning keeps your pipes working correctly while protecting you from added damage that can occur with DIY attempts.
Our Sewer Cleaning Process & Technology
At Zoom Drain of Kansas City, we use proven steps to deliver safe, thorough cleaning for every customer. We start with a full assessment of your sewer line, using advanced video inspection tools to pinpoint the cause of the blockage. This technology allows us to target only the problem area and recommend the most effective solution—helping us avoid unnecessary disruption to your property.
When we identify the issue, our team chooses the tools best suited to the pipe condition and the type of clog. For stubborn buildup, we use hydro jetting equipment that clears away grease, roots, or debris with a controlled stream of water—preserving your plumbing without harsh chemicals. Our technicians arrive with fully stocked service vehicles so we have the resources to address most issues on the first visit. In Kansas City, we follow all municipal guidelines for sewer line cleaning to ensure the process meets local standards and protects your system for the long run.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I schedule sewer cleaning for my property?
Most homes in Kansas City benefit from professional sewer cleaning every one to two years, especially if trees are nearby or your system is older. Regular maintenance helps prevent major blockages and can reduce the chance of needing expensive repairs later.
Can you clean sewers during bad weather or heavy rain?
Our team works in most conditions, but heavy rain or flooded yards might delay service to protect your property and keep our crew safe. We will always inform you if weather impacts your appointment, so you know what to expect.
Will I need a permit for sewer cleaning service in Kansas City?
Routine cleaning on private property usually does not require a permit. However, if we discover structural problems or if the work includes the public right-of-way, the city may require approval. We discuss any required steps with you before starting the service.

I'm a new customer and have nothing but accolades to say about my first phone call and conversation, as well as Frank, the technician who came out promptly and observed the trouble with our septic tank and confirmed with a camera that the tank needed to be pumped before any further work on the clog. Very professional and patient explaining what could and should be done. Pleasant to converse with. I'm very pleased and looking forward to the crew to show up ASAP for the pumping.Gerald Nierman
First of all, your customer service is the best I have experienced in our current culture for a long time. Your quick, excellent reply, excellent personality, and experienced technicians! They explain all the details in an easy way to understand! I have never had a company send a text with a photo of the technician and give a background history of the technician! It was a mind-blowing experience! Keep up the excellent customer service and work! Thank you so very much! I will highly recommend you!Rudy F Yanez
I called Zoom Drains to clean out my pipes from years of buildup and grunge that was seen on a camera view from having a backup cleared. They suggested what's called hydro jetting the drain. They came out the next day and did an excellent job cleaning the full length of piping from the backup of a stool upstairs to the main drain downstairs. I was very pleased with the service, the friendliness of the technician as well as his knowledge and how they worked to complete the job start to finish. I recommend anyone having plumbing issues to call Zoom no matter your plumbing issue as they do it all. My stool now flushes completely and no more backups! Thank you, Frank from Zoom Drains, for a great job! I will definitely use them again if ever needed. They are also very reasonable and fair cost-wise.Sheila Bailey

Robert, the technician, came and helped me with my kitchen sink. He was courteous, knowledgeable, and punctual. He identified the issue and did a pipe replacement to fix a dramatic clog. I would recommend Zoom Plumbing to anyone who has a plumbing issue.Richard
We could not rave more about Zoom Drain! My husband and I had a horrible backup in our basement. Believing we just needed a quick fix of our septic tank being pumped, we originally had another company come out to help out. They came out three times, each time with absolutely no solution, no information, and an unhelpful attitude. At this point, we decided to try a different company, which is how we ended up with Zoom Drain. The very first visit out, the GM, Derek, came out and absolutely blew our minds with the information and helpfulness he provided. Though he was delivering bad news that it won’t be a quick fix, we felt so much better and taken care of. We ended up with multiple pipes fixed, a new hot water heater, our yard dug and then fixed beautifully, a clean out added, and our septic tank pumped all by our tech Jacob. He did an amazing job and was also very knowledgeable. This all with a price that was reasonable. They never once made us feel forced into getting something done that we weren’t sure about but were always upfront and honest about our situation. I cannot thank Zoom Drain enough for all the work put in and making us feel at ease through the process. They definitely helped relieve a lot of potential stress. I truthfully cannot recommend them enough.Jordan Cucchiara
