Not All Clogs Are Caused by What You’d Expect
When it comes to residential drain clogs in summer, most people think of big messes—like grease down the disposal or sand tracked into the tub. But some of the worst offenders are small, everyday things you don’t think twice about.
At Zoom Drain, we’re called in every summer to clear out clogs that could’ve been avoided with just a little insight. So today, we’re sharing the less obvious plumbing offenders we see all the time—and what you can do to stop them.
1. Sunscreen and Body Oil Residue
Why it’s a problem: It doesn’t just rinse off. Sunscreens and body oils are thick, sticky, and often contain waxes or silicone-based ingredients. When rinsed off in the shower or sink, they cling to pipe walls and trap hair and soap scum—creating a perfect storm for slow drains.
What to do instead: Use a drain catcher in showers and run hot water for a few seconds after rinsing off. If you have a pool, try outdoor rinse stations or quick towel-off routines to reduce residue indoors.
2. “Flushable” Wipes
Why it’s a problem: Despite the label, these wipes don’t break down like toilet paper. They clump together in pipes—especially during summer when usage is high—and create solid blockages in sewer lines.
What to do instead: Stick to toilet paper only, and remind guests or kids to toss wipes in the trash. Even one “flushable” wipe can start a clog in older or low-flow plumbing systems.
3. Fruit Peels and Rinds
Why it’s a problem: Summer brings more fresh fruit—watermelon, citrus, corn, and more. But fibrous peels and rinds are too tough for your disposal and don’t break down easily. Instead, they jam the blades or lodge deep in the pipes.
What to do instead: Compost them, or toss them in the trash. The garbage disposal is for soft scraps—nothing stringy, starchy, or hard.
4. Sand, Dirt, and Grass Clippings
Why it’s a problem: Kids, pets, and beach gear can bring in more than just fun. Sand, mud, and tiny pebbles rinse off in tubs and showers and settle in drains—especially in basement or outdoor showers. Over time, that sediment creates slowdowns or full-on clogs.
What to do instead: Hose off outside when possible. Keep a towel by entry points to dry off pets or wipe feet. And regularly clean the floor and shower drains to prevent buildup.
5. Small Toys and “Accidental Flushes”
Why it’s a problem: With kids home all summer, we see a spike in accidental flushes: action figures, Legos, hair accessories, you name it. These objects don’t just clog the toilet—they can block the whole line.
What to do instead: Install child-proof toilet locks for toddlers. Keep bathroom doors closed when possible. And if something does go down, don’t try to force it—call in a pro with a camera inspection.
