Why Your Sump Pump Matters
Your sump pump is often the only thing standing between your lower level and unwanted water. It sits in a pit, collects groundwater and seepage, then pushes that water away from the foundation through a discharge line. When everything is working, you may barely notice it. When it fails, the results can be hard to ignore.
In and around Hockessin, heavier rains and changing seasons can place a lot of demand on sump systems. Homes with basements, finished lower levels, or storage and mechanical rooms below grade rely on that pump to move water away quickly. If it cannot keep up, you may see standing water, damp walls, musty odors, or damage to flooring and belongings.
Beyond the immediate mess, repeated moisture can contribute to mold growth and long-term damage to building materials. That is why timely sump pump maintenance and repair are such an important part of protecting your investment. When we check and service your system, we work to help you face the next storm with more confidence.
Our Sump Pump Service Process
At Zoom Drain of Delaware, we believe in a clear, systematic approach to protecting your basement. From your initial call to the final inspection, our process is designed to be efficient and transparent. We focus on the entire drainage system to ensure your home remains dry and safe during the heaviest Charlotte storms.
Our technicians follow these specific steps to restore your peace of mind:
- Thorough Inspection: We examine the pit, float, check valve, and discharge lines to find the root cause of every problem.
- Advanced Testing: Using electrical diagnostics and video technology, we confirm your pump’s capacity and ensure the discharge path is clear.
- Clear Communication: We explain our findings in plain language and provide flat-rate options before any repair or installation work begins.
- Expert Execution: Our team performs precise repairs or replacements while protecting your property with mats and thorough post-job cleanup.
Once the work is complete, we perform a final stress test to guarantee performance. We also provide maintenance tips to help you prevent future emergencies. Trust our specialized team to leave your crawl space or basement better prepared for the next big rain.
Common Sump Pump Problems We See
Most sump pump problems start with small signs that are easy to ignore, then show up in a big way when the weather turns. Because we work on drainage and pumping systems regularly, we see patterns that help us recognize what might be going on in your home or business.
Some pumps simply will not turn on when the water rises. Others run constantly, even when the pit is almost dry. You might hear loud grinding or rattling noises, notice short cycling where the pump starts and stops frequently, or see that the pump runs but water still enters the basement. These symptoms often point to mechanical wear, electrical issues, float problems, or an undersized unit.
We also encounter clogs in the sump pit or intake screen that restrict water flow, along with discharge lines that are blocked, frozen, or damaged underground. In older buildings around Hockessin, pumps may be tied into older drainage systems that have accumulated scale or debris over many years. In these cases, our background in drain cleaning and sewer work becomes especially important.
Watch for these warning signs that it is time to call for help:
- Unusual noises from the pump during operation.
- Visible rust, corrosion, or debris in the pit.
- Frequent on-and-off cycling in a short period.
- Water on the basement floor near the pit after rain.
- A pump that does not run, even as water rises.
Sump pump service can often prevent small issues from turning into emergencies. During a service visit, we can clean and test the system, look for wear, and discuss any upgrades that might make sense for your property.

Jonathan Rodriguez from Zoom Drain has bailed us out of work previously done incorrectly by correcting the hot and cold feeds running into and out of the hot water heater and bringing them up to code by replacing the first 12” of PEX with copper pipe. We had occasion to use Zoom again recently when a pipe burst inside the laundry room wall. Jonathan again bailed us out of an unholy mess (no pun intended). He replaced the cracked pipe, corrected its placement, and swapped the hot and cold lines, which had hot water coming out of the backyard spigot (!). We presented a mess, and Jonathan was calm, professional, courteous, and efficient. He cleaned up after himself, and you’d never guess what had happened just hours before his arrival. If you’re reading this review and not using Zoom Drain, you should seriously consider rethinking your decision. They’re good at what they do, go above and beyond, and are competitively priced. Thank you yet again, Zoom!R Fletcher

Aaron solved our problem, was courteous, clean/tidy, and very professional. Pricing was fair and upfront. Would highly recommend.Tom
Aaron Felts did an amazing job. I had a major clog, and all the plumbers kept telling me is, "We can't find it," and their solution was to tear up my driveway and replace all the piping for 29,000 dollars. Aaron assessed the situation and gave me a quote to jet set it. He explained everything to me on what everything entailed and even answered my idiotic questions I had. He came back out a few days later, took his time to ensure we would get the clog out. The clog was nowhere even near the sewer; it was built up in an elbow under the house. You're lucky if you get him as your technician. He did an amazing job! I can't say enough good things about him and how he put me at ease every step of the way!Jennifer Clark
