Zoom Drain of Washington is proud to collaborate with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department to support their Financial Assistance for Septic Systems Program, helping protect Washington’s waterways and environment.
Why Septic System Care Matters in Pierce County
Pierce County relies heavily on on-site sewage systems (septic systems) due to its large rural areas and our unique terrain. Over the past 30 years, rapid population growth outpaced municipal sewer expansion. The county’s mountains, valleys, and waterfronts make installing large sewer systems challenging and costly.
In the early 2000s, concerns grew about water pollution in our Puget Sound as well as our lakes, and streams. Untreated sewage from failing septic systems led to algae blooms, harming wildlife and disrupting ecosystems. Rural lakes like Spanaway Lake (image above) show these impacts today. To combat this, in subsequent years Pierce County introduced septic regulations, enforcement measures, and financial aid programs.
Septic System Regulations: What Homeowners Need to Know
If you live near a watershed or body of water, Pierce County requires regular septic inspections:
- Every 3 years for most properties
- Annually for high-risk areas usually adjacent to lakes and streams
You’ll receive a notice by mail when your inspection is due. A functioning septic system, through the magic of biology, effectively treats sewage. These rules help ensure that your septic system is working effectively to protect our water. Communities that are in the impacted areas include Puyallup, Tacoma, Bonney Lake, Lake Tapps, Spanaway, South Hill, Orting, Sumner, and Fife.
